Marangu Route 6 Days

A classic, direct southeastern climb with reliable shelter in wet weather.

Duration5 / 6 daysStayMountain hutsLevelModerate trail, demanding altitude profile

The route

A complete look at your climb.

Marangu is the only Kilimanjaro route where climbers sleep in permanent mountain huts. It follows the same trail up and down from the south-east. Edward particularly recommends Marangu during the rainy season because a roof and bunk bed provide more shelter than a tent.

Edward’s adviceChoose six days for an extra acclimatisation day at Horombo Hut.

Day by day

Your route to Uhuru Peak.

Day01
Hotel pickup · Marangu Gate · Mandara Hut on the Kilimanjaro route

Hotel pickup → Marangu Gate → Mandara Hut

Register at the gate and hike through rainforest to Mandara Hut. For day 1 of the 6-day Marangu Route, the park formalities and team briefing are completed before the walking starts. Edward introduces the terrain ahead on Hotel pickup to Marangu Gate to Mandara Hut and uses the opening kilometres to find a comfortable group pace.

Walking time4–5 hoursOvernightMandara Hut · 2,700 m
Day02
Mandara Hut · Horombo Hut on the Kilimanjaro route

Mandara Hut → Horombo Hut

Walk into the moorland zone with wide views of Kilimanjaro’s two main peaks. The terrain on day 2 of the 6-day Marangu Route determines where the group pauses and how Edward divides the walking time. On arrival after Mandara Hut to Horombo Hut, the crew serves a warm meal while the guide reviews that day’s altitude response and the next morning’s plan.

Walking time6–8 hoursOvernightHorombo Hut · 3,720 m
Day03
Horombo acclimatisation day on the Kilimanjaro route

Horombo acclimatisation day

Hike towards Zebra Rocks or Mawenzi, reaching a higher altitude before descending to sleep at Horombo again. The altitude reached on day 3 of the 6-day Marangu Route is used deliberately before the route drops towards its overnight point. During the evening after Horombo acclimatisation day, Edward compares appetite, energy and any symptoms before discussing the next section.

Day04
Horombo Hut · Kibo Hut on the Kilimanjaro route

Horombo Hut → Kibo Hut

Cross the Saddle to the final hut while conserving energy for the summit. The terrain on day 4 of the 6-day Marangu Route determines where the group pauses and how Edward divides the walking time. On arrival after Horombo Hut to Kibo Hut, the crew serves a warm meal while the guide reviews that day’s altitude response and the next morning’s plan.

Walking time6–8 hoursOvernightKibo Hut · 4,700 m
Day05
Uhuru Peak · Horombo Hut on the Kilimanjaro route

Uhuru Peak → Horombo Hut

Climb through the night to Gilman’s Point and Uhuru Peak, then descend via Kibo to Horombo. Before day 5 of the 6-day Marangu Route begins, Edward checks the clothing, water and headlamps needed for the night ascent. The rhythm and rest stops on this Marangu Route summit stage are adjusted to the group rather than fixed to a race against the clock.

Walking time12–15 hoursOvernightHorombo Hut · 3,720 m
Day06
Horombo Hut · Marangu Gate on the Kilimanjaro route

Horombo Hut → Marangu Gate

Finish through rainforest and return to your hotel after the certificate ceremony.
